Confirmation, Accreditation

& Qualification

As with most universities and educational organisations, the course you study is sometimes only part of what you are trying to ACHIEVE.

1. Getting your Diploma

When you successfully complete a linguisttraining.com course, you will receive a certificate confirming a Diploma. In the UK, having a Diploma is essential / required by some Public Sector organisations.

Successful completion of courses entails:

  • Completing all Modules and Lessons

  • Completing all Exercises

  • Carrying out Translation Practices and / or LanguagePartnerᵀᴹ Mentoring sessions

  • Passing a Final Assessment

For many people, having this Diploma is sufficient for their career objectives.

2. Being ‘qualified’

If you wish to / need to have an officially ‘accredited’ qualification, you must sit and pass an exam. The CIOLQ is the only organisation in the UK permitted by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) to run these exams. The following courses have associated exams (in fact, our courses have been specifically designed for these exams).

  • DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting) - Law or Health (Level 6 - Degree)

  • CertTrans (Certificate in Translation) (Level 6 - Degree)

  • DipTrans (Diploma in Translation) (Level 7 - Master’s Degree)

You can ascertain which level is right for you, by reading our page What Course Should You Take? >

“I would like to thank you and all the team for your work. I have received the results of DPSI exam in the post yesterday and I was very pleased - 3 Merits, 1 Pass and 1 Distinction. I have studied hard, of course, but I had all the necessary materials provided (very well written and structured), your help and advice during the whole process of learning and, of course, my Language Partner was very professional, knowledgeable and supportive.”

Elena, DPSI

“I have passed all three papers first time - two distinctions and a merit. Thank you for your support. Please thank my tutor for the support and useful comments.”

Jesús, DipTrans 2022

Taking your Exam

To take a CIOLQ exam, you ‘attend’ the CIOLQ Virtual Centre.

When you take an exam ‘at’ the CIOLQ Online Virtual Centre, you sit at home and are invigilated via a camera on your computer. All parts of the exam are administered virtually, and for those exams where oral submission is required, the CIOL use Microsoft Teams. The exams are available in the UK and internationally across all timezones.

You must be completely alone, have complete silence and have all the necessary IT equipment and a strong, constant internet connection.

You can read more about the CIOLQ Online Virtual centre at ciol.org.uk/benefits/exam-resources.

What if I don’t have the correct facilities for this?

If you don’t have facilities to enable you to sit on your own in silence, and access the internet for the whole period of the exam, we can help. We are very happy to offer our enrolled students use of our meeting room at our Sheffield office, free of charge. The benefit of this is that you will be attending a professional building, with all the correct facilities and the correct environment for your exam.

This will provide:

  • A space for you to take the exam in silence.

  • Internet connection

  • Toilet and refreshment facilities

  • Free parking and close to rail and bus stations

We are not:

  • Acting as an ‘Exam Centre’

  • Providing the examination - only the CIOLQ can do that.

  • Acting as invigilators - you are simply borrowing a quiet room for the period of your exam.

You would need to bring:

  • Your computer (ideally a laptop)

  • Your reference materials

From Our Founder

“We are delighted to lend you a space at our offices. The atmosphere is calm, cool and collected - ideal to set you at ease! Refreshments and free parking are available and we are only a short bus-ride (or a walk) away from the railway and bus stations. If you need that extra pick-me-up, there is a Costa just a few minutes away!”

Eileen, linguisttraining.com Founder

From Our Students

“I would like to give my most sincere thanks to all the team at Linguist Training. The exam was well organised and was carried out in a very relaxed atmosphere. We were well looked-after and everything was done to make us feel comfortable. Thank you again :)”

Exam Calendar

Please see CIOLQ approximate exam months below. Please note that these are approximate. Only the CIOLQ can confirm the exact dates for exams and you should always check their website for accurate information and registration details.

Exam Fees

You must pay separately for the preparatory course and the exam:

The preparatory course

To prepare for the exam.

Any reputable company offering good courses will, of course, charge a fee for this.

See all our courses HERE.

The exam fee

Paid to the CIOLQ for registration on to the examination, facilitation, marking, etc)

DipTrans example:

  • Unit 01 - £440

  • Unit 02 - £325

  • Unit 03 - £325

All Units - £650 (Exam Fees are capped at £650; if the total cost of the units you are sitting exceeds this amount, the maximum Exam Fee is still £650).

Preparation For The Exam

CIOL Qualifications is the Awarding Organisation that creates and runs the exams, but it does not run taught preparation courses for these. The CIOLQ says: “It is good practice to prepare for a professional qualification by following a course of study”.

They do expect that students will need to study a preparation course before taking the exam, and experience teaches us that it is almost impossible to pass the exams without studying first.
